In today’s world, it is almost impossible to live without smartphones or gadgets. People use them for calling/SMS, GPS (Global Positioning System), Multi-media, etc, facilities. But to run this device, one must recharge the battery or power source of smart devices. We all are using electricity to get our phones charged by chargers. But imagine the situation, the amount of power that the complete world uses for charging? Charging is the most basic task everyone performs every day for their smartphone or gadgets. This power is generated by burning coal, gas, or oils that are non-renewable and will be depleted soon. They are also harmful to our mother earth’s atmosphere. So, one of the alternative options is to use renewable energy sources like ‘solar energy, ‘geothermal energy, ‘wind energy, etc., but again they are costlier during installation and can not be available everywhere one desires to use or install. This article introduces one innovative charging technology using the piezoelectricity concept.
Types of Energy
On the other hand, we do not require building a separate power plant for charging purposes. We only need a few watts of electric power to be generated by any suitable means which gives us economical as well as beneficial power options suitable to everyone. We can use our human energy to generate sufficient power by ourselves. We can generate two types of energy, active and passive energy. Active energy is the energy generated by the use of a hand crank device. Passive energy is the inherent energy possessed by our body parts like the brain or heartbeats. Pacemakers, audio-visual devices installed in our body can be run by heartbeats or brains. These energy sources are with us so, these can be available to use every time.
Innovative charging technique:
In July 2011, Joao Lammoglia used this inherent energy of our human body and developed an electronics ‘Mask’ that converts the wind energy of our breath into electric energy which can be used for charging smartphones, gadgets, or small electronics items.
This innovative charging device works based on the ‘Piezoelectricity’ principle which generates electrical power when air vibrates the piezoelectric device in a mask and supplies the generated electricity to a device to be charged via a USB cable. One can use this mask during reading, sleeping, or during any activity for charging one’s equipment. One can run and use speedy breathing activity to speed up the charging process. These devices are a product of AIRE Concept by Joao Lammoglia and winner of the ‘’Red Dot Design Award: best of the best 2011.”. One can find its application in medical science, aerospace programs, rescue suits, etc.
This innovative charging device was introduced by Joao Lammoglia, as a part of Franklin Templeton Investments partnered with the TEDxGateway Mumbai in December 2012.
