It is rightly said by Chanakya, “One should learn from mistake or experience of others rather than waiting for it to happen to us”. This article is all about sharing my experience of lecturer post at NIT Surat (SVNIT, Surat). I did my M. Tech from the same institute with Industrial Process Equipment Design (IPED), an L&T-sponsored course. I still remember that day with heavy rainfall. The number of the candidates shortlisted was 28 but out of them, only twelve come to the venue for an interview.
The interview penal consists of five members including HOD – Mechanical Engineering Department, Director of SVNIT (Chairman of Interview), and the other three members who were from IITs from the mechanical engineering department.
Interview Process:
The interview started with a question from the chairman i.e. Director of the institute. He asked, “what are you doing nowadays and what is your future planning?” Normally the first question of any interview is asked by the chairman of the interview panel and which normally asked in order to get the overall picture of the candidate including basic qualifications, family background, and the interest of candidate. As I mentioned about my job as a lecturer at L D College of Engineering, Ahmedabad, one of the panel members asked me, “Which subjects do you teach at First year level in Engineering? I answered the Element of Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Graphics, and Thermodynamics. After getting an overall idea about subjects, they asked me the following questions one by one based on the answer to my previous question.
Questions asked:
- Why study EME (Elements of Mechanical Engineering)? I briefly explained the overall objective and content of the subject. This question was asked by first panel member.
- What are the drives? types? what is the belt drive?. How will you select a belt drive and why? These question was related to one of the content chapter from the EME subject.
- What are the design criteria for the shaft?. Define the ‘Factor of safety in the simple sentence. These two questions were asked by machine design expert and he wanted to check my machine design concepts.
- What is the meaning of ‘Thermodynamic equilibrium‘? What is the meaning of thermal, mechanical and chemical equilibrium? Which properties does each thermodynamics law define? What is the meaning of flow work and its importance? What is the difference between exergy and Anergy? : All these were questions from a professor who was expert in thermal engineering.
- At which condition Mohr’s Circle becomes a point? : They wanted to check my strength of material concepts.
It was a nice experience! I got selected then and worked at NIT-Surat from Sept. 2010 to Aug. 2013.
